DESTINATIONS
Cayo:
This is our most visited and diverse
destination on the mainland. You'll find an abundance of ruins (Tikal just over
the border, Caracol, Xunantunich, Cahal Pech, El Pilar and more), caving (easy
to very challenging), horseback riding, jungle river canoeing and kayaking, camping,
rappelling, birding and hiking. Its a delightful area with lots of very friendly
people. Many visitors traveling by road enter and depart Belize in Benque Viejo
on the Guatemalan border. San Ignacio is the hub for tourist activities on the
Macal River, the Maya Mountains and Mountain Pine Ridge. This is where some of
Belize's finest jungle lodges are located. Belize's capitol, Belmopan, is also
located in the Cayo district, as is Spanish Lookout, the largest Mennonite settlement
in the country. The Mennonites are farmers who immigrated to Belize in late 1950's
and are responsible for a great deal of what you'll find on your dinner plates.
