The Belize Barrier Reef, the second largest in the world, stretches 190 extraordinary miles from north to south. The Belize Barrier Reef was designated a UNESCO Heritage Site and is considered to be one of the most spectacular natural formations on the planet. The Belize Reef attracts a plethora of marine life and serves to protect the integrity of the outer islands and coastline. Historically, its jagged edges served to dissuade all but the most dogged of invading ships.
Three pristine coral-ringed atolls (Lighthouse Reef, Turneffe Island and Glovers Reef ) and numerous patch coral reefs, add hundreds of miles of different diving and snorkeling opportunities. The underwater world of Belize is remarkable and is easily accessible for both snorkelers and divers.
The lodges on the outer atolls (Belize has three of four atolls found in the Western Hemisphere) best serve those who want to see the most marine diversity and will be happy on a remote island. These lodges are dedicated to diving, snorkeling and fishing. Accommodations are upscale and very comfortable. You can opt for a three, four or seven night dive, snorkel or fishing package.
Belize Dive and snorkel operators offer day trips to all three atolls from different parts of the coastline. The Blue Hole is one of the famous sites in the world. The Great Blue Hole is a geological sinkhole within Lighthouse Reef, measuring one thousand feet in diameter and four hundred feet in depth. Jacques Cousteau explored the interior of the Blue Hole. While snorkelers swim around the outer rim, divers sink to 130 or so feet to see the caverns below. Note: This is an advanced dive. All day trips to the Blue Hole include two additional dives, including the spectacular Half Moon Caye Wall.
Snorkeling in Belize is incredibly satisfying. The Belize Reef protrudes up through the surface, allowing swimmers closer proximity to the coral community. Two major attractions which delight both divers and snorkelers are Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark-Ray Alley (passive nurse sharks and spotted eagle rays). The sites are close to each other and are accessible from Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker and Belize City. The Belize Reef in this area is less than a mile from the islands.
Excellent visibility, prolific marine life and beautiful reef formations offer some of the best Belize Diving found anywhere. The topography includes caverns, caves, sheer wall drop offs, sink holes and more. Try at least one night dive (or snorkel) to see the nocturnal creatures living on the Belize Reef. The undersea world is stunning at night, with the stars in the sky looming above and visible from eighty feet below the surface.
Visitors who want to dive, dive, dive Belize should seriously consider one of the plush live aboard Belize Dive Boats or the Belize Dive Resorts on the atolls and outer islands on the living Belize Reef. Those who want a variety of activities--both day and night-- should base on Ambergris, Placencia, Caye Caulker or in the Hopkins-Sittee River area.
Belize is fortunate to have a marine environment healthy enough to support a wide range of species, many of which you will surely come into contact with: dolphins, turtles, rays, sharks, eels, lobsters and more. The most extraordinary of them all, is the whale shark, which at some forth five plus feet, makes this docile creature the largest fish in the sea. The whale sharks congregate near Gladden Split, off Placencia, about 25 miles from the coast. They are present in this area from March until June and the best time to see them would be 3 days before and after the full moon. The whale sharks are attracted by the spawning snappers, and can also be found roaming outside the reef further north and south. Dive operators in Placencia offer both dive and snorkel trips to swim with these behemoth creatures.
Belize Dive operators offer a wide range of PADI and NAUI courses. Non-divers may want to consider the Discover Diving course, which consists of a few hours of basic theory followed by a dive. You can become a certified diver here, but we suggest you at least begin your classroom and pool work at home and complete the diving portion of your course in Belize. This is called an open water referral. The course requires a good deal of reading and memorization, which you may prefer to do at home and not on vacation.
