DESTINATIONS - ISLAND AND CAYES
Beaches, Cayes and Atolls:
San Pedro, Ambergris Caye:
This island is our most socially active and popular destination. It has the largest selection of accommodations, restaurants, bars and people. Hotels, condos, inns and house rentals are all available. Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley (swim with docile nurse sharks and spotted eagle rays) are the most popular attractions. The reef is less than a mile from the shore. Dive operators offer local reef and full day 3 tank dive and snorkel trips to spectacular atolls nearby, including the Blue Hole and Half Moon Caye Natural Monument Reservation (a booby bird sanctuary). Kayaking, fishing, jet skis, windsurfing, power sailing, bike and golf cart rentals are all readily available. Day trips to the mainland by boat or air to visit ruins, view wildlife, for river cave tubing and horseback riding are also easy to arrange. The island is easily accessed by plane or water taxi.
Caye Caulker:
Neighboring Caye Caulker offers many of the same water activities and access to mainland day trips. Most of the accommodations on Caye Caulker range from budget to moderate and attract backpackers and a younger crowd. This island is less developed and even more laid back than San Pedro. Caye Caulker is serviced by plane or water taxi.
Caye Chapel:
Privately owned island with a formidable golf course open to the public. Reservations
must be made in advance. There is a private airstrip with regularly scheduled
flights.
South Water Caye and Tobacco Caye:
Two islands off Dangriga situated right on the reef and perfect for walk in snorkeling and wade in fishing. South Water Caye is the larger of the two with fewer people, more space, a better beach and more upscale accommodations. Tobacco Caye has a nice assortment of budget to moderate inns. There's fabulous snorkeling, diving and fishing on the local reef and day trips to Glovers Atoll, a marine reserve with spectacular diving and snorkeling.
